Google Ads inside ChatGPT

Add PaidHelm as a custom MCP connector in ChatGPT developer mode and run Google Ads reports, cleanups, bid changes and campaign builds from a ChatGPT conversation.

ChatGPT supports remote MCP servers as custom connectors. Once added, PaidHelm's tools appear in any chat where you enable the connector.

Setup

  1. Enable developer mode. Settings → Connectors → Advanced settings → turn on Developer mode.
  2. Create the connector. Back in Connectors, click Create. Name PaidHelm Google Ads, description "Google Ads reports and management", URL: 
    https://mcp.paidhelm.com/googleads/mcp
    Authentication: OAuth. Tick the acknowledgment and click Create.
  3. Authorize. ChatGPT opens Google's consent screen. Sign in with the account that has Google Ads access and accept.
  4. Use it in a chat. In a new chat, click + → More → select the PaidHelm connector (developer mode). Ask your first question.

Tips for ChatGPT

  • ChatGPT asks for confirmation before write tools by default; keep that on.
  • Use a Custom GPT or a Project with instructions that name the client account and your guardrails.
  • Ask for tables; ChatGPT renders them well and can export to a spreadsheet.

Troubleshooting

  • "Connector failed to connect": verify the URL includes /googleads/mcp and that pop-ups are allowed.
  • Tools greyed out: the connector must be selected in the chat's More menu.
  • Workspace plans: your admin may need to approve custom connectors.

Which ChatGPT plans support custom connectors?
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces may require an admin to enable developer mode or approve the connector.
Why is it called developer mode?
OpenAI labels full MCP tool access (read and write) as developer mode because the assistant can take actions. PaidHelm's paused-by-default design and your approval keep those actions safe.
